1st Editorial - Oedipus

Ignorance and Oedipus   

         Ignorance, whether on a global or issue-specific scale is morally wrong, and harms many people. In the book Oedipus Rex, the main character was very arrogant and extremely ignorant of his own misgivings. This lack of attention cost him greatly, causing him astounding pain and suffering. The same goes for the victims of human trafficking and the world around them. If the world continues down the path of intentional ignorance, then the victims suffering from human trafficking will never be able to receive the care needed, and will be forever crushed under the pain of slavery.

         On average, over 70% of human trafficking victims are women and children sold into sexual slavery and prostitution (Tiurukanova). It is estimated, that in Russia, over 50,000 children are involved in involuntary prostitution (Educate Yourself). These staggering numbers show the insane amount of human beings being trafficked throughout Russia. While small efforts are being made to help the victims of human trafficking, currently there is no global effort to stop human trafficking and sexual slavery. The world is afraid of realizing what they have done at the expense of helpless women and children. The poor souls suffering through this tragedy have nothing, no love, no hope, and, in their eyes, no chance. With the world around them ignoring their desperate pleas for help, these victims have no one to turn to. The intentional ignorance of the world is hurting human beings in unimaginable ways, destroying any chance of a bonding peace throughout the world.
